Definition of a Ratio
=================
- Ratio is the relation which one quantity bears to
another of the same kind with the comparison being
made by considering what part or parts one quantity
bears to another .
- The general representation of a ratio is in the form of
"A : B " .
- The quantities involved in the expression are called
the terms of the ratio .
- The term preceding the colon is called the
antecedent and the term following the colon sign is
called the consequent
- To find what part A is of B's we divide A by B and it is
measured by the fraction A/B
- A ratio is an abstract quantity that means it expresses
the number of times one quantity contains another
Quantity
- By the laws of fraction :
a/b = (m*a)/(m*b)
and a/b= (a/m)/(b/m)
where , m is any number .
- This means that the value of a ratio remains unaltered
if the antecedent and the consequent are multiplied or
divided by the same quantity
- Two or more ratios can be compared by reducing
their equivalent fractions to a common denominator .
example: two ratios are provided a:b and x:y
commonising the denominators:
a:b=ay:by and x:y = bx/by
